If not, to what extent can deepening be affected, and for vessels of what dimensions (length,

It is intended to provide for the (1) The Brisbane River could Consideration has been given
largest type of ship at Port Adelaide (Outer Harbour).
In order to obtain there a depth of 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) it would be necessary to dredge a channel about 12,000 ft. in length.
It is estimated that to do thie and to provide four berths for vessels 1,000 ft. in length und of 100 ft. beam would cost 1,250,0002, but no de- tailed estimates have been made out.
be developed to a depth of 35 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.). Ite development to 30 ft. (L.W.Ö.S.T.) ts plated.
contem-
The present depth of 4 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) is sufficient, but it is proposed to provide an additional 2 ft. in the waterway, in the first in- stance from Moreton Bay to Pinkenha, making the depth 26 ft. (L.W.0.S.T.). Owing to Brisbane being au end port a depth of 24 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) accomandatea the same vessel which requires 28 to 30 ft. (L.W.OS.T.) at Sydney and Melbourne respectively. (2) Up to the new proposed basin at Hamilton (for which me annwer to Question 13 below) the waterway from Moreton Bay could be de- veloped to 35 ft. (L.W.OST.) in 10 years if necessary.
(3) The probable cost of this improvement would be about 300,0007, and to develop the depths of the proposed busin from 26 ft. to 85 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) would 110,0001. in addition.
cost
to attaining a depth of 40 fr below lowest low water, and there is no inherent difficulty! in reaching it, but no com plete estimate has yet ber taken ont. Ships 1,000 ft. in length and of 100 ft. bear. can be accommodated. Ther is in the present basin a width of 1,400 ft. everywhere.
1) Ton.
The water in the harbour, narrow strip along the except
it. foreshore, already exceeds 40 (L.W.O.S.T.). 2) One berth at Pier No. 1 to take a vessel 1,000 ft. long, with a minimum depth of water of 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.). could be provided in 3 months if useded. For additional berths new piers could be built or the present piers lengthened. 8) The berth at the now pier could be provided at a cost of about 6.0007. Other piers for this class of boat would cost not less than 60,000, to construct.
As regards the entrance at Port Philip Heuds and the South Channel, leading to Port Philip Bay, the difficulty is that, owing to special conditions, R-10 ft. hus tu Ie allowed for "scend."
Tu
As already stated, the depth is now being increased to 43 ft. (L.W.0.8.T.). This increase is expected to take 12 years und to cost 80,0007. to 70,0001. obtain a depth of 47 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) would cost a further amount of say 90,000 to 100,000, and would take an extra 10 years. To obtain a depth of 50 ft. (E.W.0.8.T.) an extra cost of 140,000 to 160,0001. would be neces sary, and time required another 14 years. Therefore to obtain a depth of 30 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.), which would be required to enable vessels drawing 40 ft. and of #length of 1,000 ft. to use the entrance, would require about 35 years and an expenditure of 280,000 to 300,0007.
Increase in the depth of the South Channel and in the channel to Port Melbourne must be contingent on the progress of operations at the Heads. It may be mrutioned, however, that to deepen the cut and ahvale in the South Channel to 30 ft. (L.W.0.S.T.) would cost about 56,0001. and take from three to four years to complete with one suction dredger.
The information necessary to give an estimate of the total cost of providing a channel for ships of the dimensions suggested from the Heads to berths is not at present available.
There is at present a channel of 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) from Heads to berths, and this depth could be provided at several berthe within a few months, if neces
sary. Accommodation of vessels of the other
dimensions anggested presents difficulty.
